A Message from Winter
I was given a gift. I can talk to Winter. I know that it isn’t a person. Winter isn’t even
figuratively represented to my satisfaction. I am not even convinced that seasons exist.
Despite my concerns, Winter has begun talking to me. We first spoke when it was leaving. I
say “it” because I don’t believe that Winter has a gender, I didn’t check. Anyway, Winter told
me that it was leaving. I was a bit confused. Who just tells you they are leaving? I mean why
not just leave? Stranger still was that I found myself irritated with Winter. I couldn’t believe
that it would go and leave the ground naked until Spring came. The trees hadn’t even begun
to bud. The animals would look ridiculously overdressed with their winter fur. Winter had
assured me that this had happened before and that everyone would be polite about it. I got
the sense that Winter wanted me to do some good PR or something. I hardly knew the season
I told it. Winter assured me that we had spent decades together and that was plenty. Still I
don’t feel comfortable with the new relationship.
